Creating and Selling Handmade Crafts
One of the most popular ways to make money sewing is by creating and selling handmade crafts. Choosing which crafts to make is the fun part!
To get extra eyes on your products, check with your local school districts, private schools and American Legions or VFW to find out when they will be having craft fair you can be a part of. My American Legion has a craft fair twice a year and an outdoor garage sale in the summer where people can rent a table for $10.00 and hundreds of people come through.
You can set up an online store or utilize e-commerce platforms such as Etsy or eBay. If you click my link on Etsy, you'll get 40 free listings to start listing items.
Create craft projects with no cash out of pocket by listing print on demand items on Etsy and Ebay and making your own graphics for them. Sites such as Printify and Printful will make the item and send it to your customers without you ever having to touch it.
Offering Sewing and Alteration Services
Another lucrative avenue for sewing enthusiasts is offering sewing and alteration services.
Setting up a mobile alterations service could be very profitable if you live in a big city. Otherwise a home-based sewing studio can bring in a large group of people who need their clothes sewn.
Price your services competitively to ensure profitability. I called around to a few local alterations stores and ask about their prices to make sure I was charging enough, but not too much that I priced myself out of the market.
You can make your services know by posting on your Facebook page and in groups in your local area. Start with a few customers and soon you will build a loyal customer base with quality work and offering great customer service.

Teaching Sewing Workshops and Classes
You can teach workshops and classes even if you don't have advanced sewing skills. Sharing your knowledge with others is a great way to bring in some extra cash.
I have taught classes with my local parks and recreation department, for homeschool students and for groups of moms in facebook groups.
Plan and structure your classes based on a specific topic or a specific audience. When my daughter was younger, she took sewing classes from another homeschool mom who offered six specific crafts that children aged 7-12 could do. I chose to offer my classes only to adults. If you are open to it, you could also poll the group you are looking at teaching and allow them to guide you in what classes they are looking for.
You'll also need to find a venue that is suitable for teaching at. That could be as simple as calling the local library to see if you can use their meeting room, or checking with your local parks department or community center in your area.
The pricing for your classes is something that is going to be very specific based on what you are teaching and if you are providing supplies. You could set up a series of classes and offer a discount if they enroll in more than one, or offer a specific group of classes for a certain price.
Make sure you are promoting your services to enough potential students. Post your classes on social media and ask friends to share with friends who would be interested.

Monetizing Sewing Tutorials and Patterns
If you're well-versed in sewing techniques and have a knack for pattern-making, you can monetize your expertise by creating and selling sewing tutorials and patterns.
Create high-quality sewing tutorials through written guides, video tutorials, or online courses. These all can be posted and sold through e-commerce sites like Etsy and eBay.
Remember all those crafts you made to sell at craft fairs we talked about above? Make the sewing patterns and sell them online! One project – two sources of income!
Sewing for Events and Special Occasions
Special events and occasions often require custom clothing and decor. Seamstresses can capitalize on these opportunities by offering sewing services.
Collaborate with event planners to offer custom sewing projects for their customers.
Market your services for weddings, parties and other special occasions. Often times you can set higher prices for event-specific sewing projects such as bridal gowns or mother of the bride dresses.

Managing Your Sewing Business
Successfully making money through sewing also requires effective business management. There are a few essential things to do make sure you are making sure you are able to earn the most money possible.
Make sure to manage your finances properly by budgeting and tracking expenses so you can see how much money you are making on each different avenue you pursue.
I offer a bundle of budget and expense tracking sheets that can make your life easier. They are available for $7.00, or can be won sometimes in drawings in my Free Facebook Group.
Growing your business will be easy to do if you provide excellent customer service, and maintain client satisfaction to get repeat business.
